Shaun White is probably one of the most recognizable and successful snowboarders on the planet. He won gold at the 2006 Olympics in the men's half pipe and is the only rider to win back-to-back gold medals in the Winter X-Games Super pipe. Known as 'The Flying Tomato' because of his long, curly red hair, Shaun has been living a charmed life and taking the sport of snowboarding along for the ride. But through all the triumphs, he remains the same down-to-earth kid, who grew up in Southern California. White was born in Carlsbad, CA on Sept. 3, 1986, into a family of five. His older brother, Jesse, was the driving force that influenced Shaun to ride at an early age.
By the time Shaun turned four, he was already kicking up snow with the family in June Mountain. However, when he was five, Shaun developed a series of heart malformations called tetralogy of Fallot and under went two surgeries to repair his damaged heart. Jesse played the older brother role to a tea and guided Shaun back to normal and back to the snow where he belonged. And so they say, the rest is history. He has won four straight gold medals in the snowboard slope style in the Winter X-Games, where he has medaled in every event since 2002. He also captured his third consecutive half pipe title at the 2008 U.S. Open Snowboarding Championships. During February 2009, Red Bull started to build Shaun a half pipe in the back country of Colorado on the backside of Silverton Mountain. Red Bull brought in snow cats to build the half pipe completely out of natural snow on one of the back country trails at Silverton. However, in April 2009, Shaun was restricted to crutches due to a bone chip in his ankle, which prevented him from boarding in preparation for the upcoming 2009 Dew Tour.
Over the years, Shaun has inspired a new generation of snowboarders. From his unique style to his trademark face mask, the sport of snowboarding will continue to evolve as long as Mr. White shreds through the snow.
