Via Ferrata is a form of climbing where the routes are equiped with fixed cables, stemples, ladders and bridges.

It was invested in the early 20th Century by the Italian Army in the
Dolomites to help move troops around at high altitudes in the war against the Austrians. 

In the US there are a few places to Via.  Ogden Utah has a wonderful Via at Waterfall Canyon, there is a place in West Virginia and Jackson Hole is putting in a spectacular multi-million dollar Via site for summer of '08.
