SkiNet, the website for Ski Magazine and Skiing Magazine, has posted its "Top 10 Most Influential Skiers of All Time." From the self-proclaimed "messiah of skiing" to the blond bombshell of yesteryear, Suzy Chapstick, skiing has seen its share of special characters; and many are on this list. Top 10 lists are always a bit dubious. Rather than being any sort of scientific analysis, the subjective nature of the exercise seems strictly intended to create conversation and controversy. Mission accomplished here. Certainly the list is somewhat U,S.-centric, but the collection of skiers is a fun perusal, regardless. Skiing’s first rock star, Alberta Tomba only gets an honorable mention? No Herman Maier on the list? Ditto for Phil Mahre, who as recently as last winter, was on the George Foreman comeback trail! Reminding us, that careers, like top 10 lists, remain fluid.
