Vonn Breaks & Makes History, Wins Super G Title

It’s a good thing the World Cup season is coming to an end, because there are no more superlatives left to explain the outstanding year Lindsey Vonn has had.  Today, at the World Championships in Are, Sweden, Vonn won her fifth super G in-a-row to clinch the World Cup super G title.  The win was her ninth of the year, breaking Phil Mahre’s American record of eight.  With three championship globes accrued in one season, Vonn ties Phil Mahre’s 1982 record for most World Cup titles in a season.

Emptying out the cupboard of superlatives, it has been the most dominating, completely overwhelming, and beyond stupendous year for Lindsey Vonn.  "It’s incredible. I was hoping so much I could win today and get the super G globe. No American female has ever done that," Vonn said. "Today is a huge day for me. I’m so happy. What a week it’s been so far."

Italy’s Nadia Fanchini was a mere 40 points behind in the super G standings.  Fanchini laid down a blistering run, putting all the pressure on Vonn.  "It was a tough fight. I knew that Nadia was in the lead and she was only 40 points behind me, so I knew I had to win if I wanted to get the title," Vonn said. "I knew she had had a great run and that it was going to take an even greater run to beat her. I think it was a bit of an advantage starting later today even though the course got slower. I knew exactly what the other women had done and I knew exactly what kind of a run it would take to win the race."  Lindsey may have known what type of run she needed to have, but it almost came undone.  She built up a commanding lead through the splits, but a near fall at the bottom erased a large chunk of her lead, leaving her to finish with a slim .08 margin over the Italian.

It’s been a World Championships of making and breaking history for Lindsey Vonn, the greatest American woman ski racer of all time.  Superlatives be damned!
