Whistler Blackcomb Named One of Canada’s Greenest Employers

It’s a long journey towards green, but some are making that journey faster than others.  Whistler Blackcomb has been named one of Canada’s Greenest Employers by Mediacorp Canada Inc.  Mediacorp is Canada’s largest publisher of quality employment.  Basically Mediacorp helps Canadians search for good jobs, and while it’s not too busy with that, it awards employers who are leading Canada towards environmental awareness in their respected companies.

“This recognition could only have happened through the commitment of each one of our staff, to whom I am profoundly grateful,” says Arthur DeJong, Whistler Blackcomb’s Mountain Planning and Environmental Resource Manager. “The road to becoming truly sustainable will be long and difficult, however the growing commitment and action at all levels of our company inspire me to believe this is possible.”

Whistler Blackcomb was awarded by the judges for their largest environmental initiative to date: the Fitzsimmons Creek renewable power project.  The hydro-electiricty project will produce 33.5 gigawatt hours of hydro electricity per year.  To help rap your head around 33.5 gigawatts, that’s enough to power the ski resort’s winter and summer operations, including 38 lifts, 17 restaurants, and 269 snowguns.

The hydro project is just one many environmental ones for the resort.  Among them are an aggressive recycling project, the installation of automated and energy efficient equipment, instilling respect for the environment through bear viewing and ecology tours, and the nearly 100 projects that the Whistler Blackcomb Habitat Improvement Team has been involved with.
