2009 Red Bull X-ALPS Race Begins Today

Today marks the beginning of the 2009 Red Bull X-ALPS transalpine race.  30 elite extreme athletes from 23 countries will hike, climb, and paraglide 818 kilometers over the Alps and through 5 countries. The event, which is held every other year, started today in the picturesque town of Salzburg, Austria as the racers ascended the first summit, Gaisberg Mountain, overlooking the city. South African athlete Pierre Carter was the first to reach the summit and launch his glider.

From here the racers will pass 6 checkpoints on the Watzmann (GER), Grobglockner (AUT), Marmolada (ITA), Matterhorn (SUI), Mont Blanc (FRA), and Mont Gros (FRA), on their way to the finish line in Monaco. It is a test of courage, endurance and will to reach the finish line. Check out theskichannel.com for updates along the way.
