Subaru Freeskiing World Tour: Battle for the McConkey Cup Begins September 2 in Chile!

Major league baseball calls its championship the World Series, yet only North America is represented.  Seeing the errors of our national pastime, the largest and longest running competitive big mountain freeskiing tour, the Subaru Freeskiing World Tour is now worldwide. Well, maybe not worldwide, but international.

Two new stops have been added to the schedule: La Pavre, Chile and Revelstoke Mountain Resort in British Columbia.  And since one of them is in Chile, that means the beginning of the FWT is only six weeks away!  Happy, happy, joy, joy!  Big-mountain comps are where it’s at!

First stop of the 2010 FWT is La Parva, Chile, September 2-5 (upper right of photo above is where the comp will take place). The other new stop, Revelstoke, has been immortalized in countless ski films.  Mandatory viewing: Tanner Hall’s pillow line at Revelstoke on a run called Rock Garden in his movie “Believe”.

The coolest part of the upcoming FWT is the decision to honor the late, great Shane McConkey.  Mountain Sports International Pres Adam Comey: “To honor our good friend and legendary skier Shane McConkey — who founded this sport and the IFSA (International Free Skiing Association) — the overall World Tour champions will be awarded with the McConkey Cup. This sport was his vision and we intend to keep it thriving for years to come.”

Can’t think of bigger honor in big-mountain skiing then winning the McConkey Cup.  I’m sure FWT’s newest star Timmy Dutton is thinking just that.  That is super cool and an appropriate tribute.
