Cash for Clunkers Program: Turn In Your Gas-Guzzling Ski SUV

If you’ve got an SUV, (which, as a skier or boarder, chances are you do) and it gets 18 mpg or worse, consider trading it in for a new vehicle. The U.S. government launched the Cash for Clunkers initiative (also known as the CARS program) Monday, which qualifies car buyers for rebates of up to $4,500 when they swap a guzzler for a newer, more fuel-efficient model.

If it seems too good to be true, try to relax. There seems to only be one catch: the car must be less than 25 years old. (We drive a seven year-old Jeep that gets 15 mpg, so chances are, you’re in the clear.)

Hurry up, though, because the CARS program is expected to end November 1, 2009. Then, or when the billion dollar federal funding disappears.
