Michael Phelps Ditches Pope for Cavic

A controversy over “inferior swimsuits” continues to add to the tantalizing storyline in the lead-up to Saturday night’s Olympic rematch between Michael Phelps and Serbian Milorad Cavic in the 100m butterfly.

Pope Benedict XVI has extended a Saturday afternoon invite-and-hang to more than a hundred of the swimmers competing at the Rome Championships.  MIchael Phelps is one of the swimmers with a Golden Ticket invite to meet the Pope.  It’s all going down at the Pope’s summer residence, Castel Gandolfo.  As it stands now, Bob Bowman, Michael Phelps’ coach, said the swimmer would not be attending, that he’d be resting up for the big rematch that night with Cavic.

A chance to break bread and sip some wine while listening to the Pope’s buddy, Bishop Richard Williamson?  MIchael Phelps, what are you thinking?
