Plaxico Burress Indicted, Teammate Pierce is not

One-time New York Giants star Plaxico Burress was indicted today by a grand jury on weapons charges.  It is the classic case of adding insult to injury, as Burress shot himself in the thigh at a Manhattan nighclub.

The minimum prison sentence if convicted is 3 1/2 years.  Manhattan District Attorney Robert Morgenthau said, “The grand jury applied the law to the facts of this case.”

The episode drew massive media attention, obviously not helping Burress.  “When you have the mayor and the district attorney both publicly demanding a maximum prison sentence, it was perhaps too much to hope for the grand jury to conduct a sympathetic review of the unique facts of this sad case,” said Burress’ lawyer, Benjamin Brafman.

Current New York Giant Antonio Piece, who was with Burress on that faithful night, was not indicted and he will not face a league suspension the NFL announced.
