Northern Utah Fires Continue to Blaze

Several lightning strikes and 50 mph winds around the Salt Lake City and Park City area knocked out power and wreaked havoc yesterday. Officials logged more than 1000 lightning strikes, and fires shot up around Salt Lake and Davis counties. The biggest blaze ignited near the airport, and shut down one of the runways. At one point, the flames jumped I80, and the highway was closed for hours.

Officials posit that the late winter storms and wet spring led to unusually dense vegetation, and the recent heat wave and dry spell made conditions prime for ignition. The more recent reports stated that there are currently about 20 active fires around the state, and the largest is only 10% contained.

Mountain enthusiasts are not happy at this point, as not only are thousands of acres getting eaten, but the air quality is also quite poor. The fires can be smelled miles away in Park City, making outdoor activities difficult. Hopefully, the firefighters will make more progress in their battles today.
