Three Russian biathletes have been banned from competition for testing positive for EPO—a substance that boosts blood, according to Reuters. Olympic gold medalist Albina Akhatova and World Champions Ekaterina Lourieva and Dmitri Yaroshenko have been banned for two-year by the International Biathlon Union (IBU).

The original positive test results were seen in December, 2008 at a World Cup in Ostersund, Sweden. However, the IBU issued the bans after delivering a provisional suspension in February. All three athletes plan to appeal the ban. It’s not determined whether or not they’ll be cleared in time for the 2010 Olympic Games in Vancouver.
