On foot Usain Bolt is the fastest human in the world. His 100 meter world record run of 9.58 seconds at the 2009 Track & Field World Championships in Berlin is simply incredible. He blew past Tyson Gay and Asafa Powell and made it look effortless.

Looking at the world record 100 meter time of 9.58, that translates to an average speed of about 23 mph with Bolt’s top speed estimated around 27 mph.

On skis however, Simone Origone of Italy is faster than Usain Bolt. He was clocked with the world speed skiing record of 156 mph at Les Arcs, France in April 2006. To put this in perspective, the average speed of an intermediate skier on a straight unimpeded run is around 15-20 mph.

The next time you think you’re going really fast down that slope, just look over your shoulder and watch out for lightning – Usain Bolt.
