This is going to be one rockin’ team this year. Three of the five members are Paralympians, including World Cup winner Chris Klebl. Plus, they’ve got Monica Bascio for the women—who was second in the overall cross country standings last year based on her performance on the World Cup. Program director Sandy Metzger boasted that “we have a veteran team with experienced athletes. We have the ability to have an amazing season and we are hoping for just that. Our athletes have what it takes to go to the top and it’s just a matter of building the consistency to get there.” Head Coach Greg Rawlings is confident in their abilities in part due to the difference in how he approached their training. “We’re definitely driving the ‘go fast’ thing into them versus the “go out there and just exercise.’ This year we got two weeks on snow for most of the athletes and they’re pretty focused. We also met up in July and had a great session utilizing the Center of Excellence. We sent everyone home with their homework and I think we’re at a lot better level now.” The U.S. Adaptive Cross Country Team starts the season with a World Cup Dec. 16-17 in Lygna, Norway. The Paralympics in Vancouver will be held March 12-21. Here’s the complete roster (* means Paralympian):
