Angeles National Forest Fire to Hit Mt. Wilson Observatory, Waterman Not Threatened

Life and death decisions are being made right now as the fire burning in the Angeles National Forest is bearing down on the historic solar observatory that sits on the top of Mt. Wilson.

The century-old Mount Wilson Observatory houses two giant telescopes.  It’s very first telescope was hauled in pieces by mule!  It’s an historical landmark and a beautiful treasure of the San Gabriel Mountains.  Firefighters know this.    But, without optimal escape routes, it’s likely fire crews will have to retreat from the observatory.  The danger to lives is way too much.

Ski enthusiasts should know that now Mt. Waterman is not threatened by this fire.  Mt. Wilson is 20+ miles (and a creek) from Lady Waterman.

Let’s hope for the best for the Mount Wilson Observatory.
