Shawn Hornbeck can relate to what South Lake Tahoe resident Jaycee Lee Dugard is going through.  Hornbeck, who is now 18, was kidnapped in spent over four years in a one-bedroom apartment with his abductor.  Hornbeck, like Dugard, was kidnapped when he was 11.  He recently gave an interview to PEOPLE Magazine, and shed some light on Dugard’s situation and how she can recover.

One of the biggest questions that many people have is why Dugard did not try to escape.  Hornbeck says that while in captivity, you are “brainwashed” and your captors “control ever little, minute detail in your life.”  He says that right now, Dugard is in “an absolute state of shock” and it feels like she is “entering a new world” and she will probably want to just be with her family, as he did.  Finally, the most important thing now is for Jaycee to heal.  Hornbeck says she now has to focus on moving on, and seeing a therapist helped him get over his anger and to take control of his life.
