Marijuana Growing in Aspen?

The sale of marijuana in Colorado is becoming a new industry, but it is the sale of the legal kind–medical marijuana.  Many dispensaries are springing up in mountain towns, and the ski resort town of Aspen already has two of them.

Advocates of medical marijuana believe these ‘stores’ were a long time coming.  Colorado approved a state constitutional amendment in 2000 recognizing the use of medical marijuana and removing penalties for the use, possession, and cultivation of the drug.  The law took effect on June 1, 2001; however, it took until this year for thousands of patients to register and for the dispensaries to appear.  At Aspen L.E.A.F., members are able to buy a quarter ounce of marijuana for $100, which is comparable to the street price.
