The Ski Train Might Be Back Afterall

The trek between Winter Park ski resort and Denver might be a little easier now that Union Pacific Railroad has agreed to let a new owner of The Ski Train use its tracks this ski season.  The previous owner, the Omaha-based Union Pacific line, had run the operation for 69 years before they and folded it last spring.  It is likely that Chicago-based Iowa Pacific Holdings will take over the line.  Iowa Pacific operates freight and passenger trains in six states, including Colorado.

On Thursday night, Union Pacific agreed to let Iowa Pacific use the same route as the previous Ski Train.  Iowa Pacific President Ed Ellis says that the line would use his company’s equipment and that Amtrak would provide the staff.  However, Iowa Pacific is still working to finalize the deal with Amtrak.
