Architecture firm Populous has announced that they have been selected to by the State Corporation to design the main stadium for the 2014 Winter Olympic games in Sochi, Russia.  This is the 25th year that Populous has designed a stadium for the Olympics, and marks the “first time in Olympic history that one design practice has been responsible for two Olympic stadiums at one time,” as the firm is also designing the main stadium for the 2012 games in London.

Populous’ Senior Principal John Barrow told reporters that “The main stadium design, in addition to the venue overlay plan we have prepared for the 2014 Games, delivers a wonderful vision for the winter Olympics, and a lasting sustainable legacy for Sochi.”  The 40,000 seat stadium features a “semi-transparent, segmented skin resembling the wings of a dragonfly.” Gizmodo’s Jesus Diaz claims that “It’s just that its translucent skin makes me a little bit itchy, because it makes me think of alien insect nests.”
