Chicago loses out as Tahoe moves in on Olympic bid

Rio de Janeiro is dancing at the Obama Olympic funeral today.  Brazil will host the 2016 Olympic Summer Games, not the home city of President Obama and the first lady.  While there is disappointment in Chicago, there is joy in Lake Tahoe.  It would be highly unlikely that Tahoe’s 2018 Winter Olympic bid would have any chance if Chicago had been selected.  One American city’s pain is another’s relief.

Squaw Valley hosted the Winter Olympics in 1960, and since that time Tahoe has grown to where it now has the largest number of ski resorts in North America.

Jim Hartley, vice chairman of the Reno Tahoe Winter Games Coaltion told the Reno Gazette-Journal, “We will continue to study Chicago’s bid closely as we move forward. Even in defeat, they achieved social and community successes in Chicago we can all learn from.”
