Athletes ready for U.S. Nordic National Championships next weekend

Next Saturday on October 10, the top Nordic skiers in the country will be gunning for their respective National Championship titles. For the second year in a row, the U.S. Ski Jumping and Nordic Combined Championships will take place during Lake Placid’s annual Flaming Leaves Festival.

“It’s a beautiful time of year to be in Lake Placid,” says World Champion Bill Demong. “The Flaming Leaves Festival marks a time of year where winter is just around the corner. There are crisp mornings and the colors of the leaves are incredible.”

Of course, those vibrant ‘flaming leaves’ don’t necessarily mean snow, so the Championships will be held on plastic jumps and the cross-country event will make use of roller skis. But just because the coming weekend is not a complete, snowy precursor to the usual events come winter, the athletes are still optimistic about the experience. “I think having pre-season Championships is a lot more productive especially in terms of the fact that it is the first real competition of the year and everybody is really fired up,” Demong says.

The event kicks off at 11 a.m. EST.
