Many similarities in cases of Lake Tahoe girl, Salt Lake victim Elizabeth Smart

The kidnapping case of South Lake Tahoe girl Jaycee Lee Dugard has created a media frenzy similar to another kidnapping case that took place in a ski town–the 2002 abduction of Salt Lake City girl Elizabeth Smart. Smart was taken from her own bedroom by Brian Mitchell, who threatened to murder her and her family unless she went with him. Dugard was also kidnapped very close to home, as Phillip Garrido snatched her while she was at her bus stop before school. Both girls were also very young at the time they went missing- Smart was 14 at the time of her abduction, while Dugard was 11.

Smart was released after nine months in captivity, where, as she testified last week, “there wasn’t a an actual 24-hour period he wasn’t able to rape me.” Although she has given several media interviews since her ordeal, her appearance in court was the first time where she went into gruesome detail about Mitchell drugging and tying her to trees in the mountains with a cable around her leg so she could not escape.

Dugard has not spoken or been seen in the public since her release from captivity that spanned almost two decades. There are reports that she will appear on the “Oprah” show in December to tell her gruesome story. Her attorney has indicated that when Garrido and his wife, Nancy, stand trial, she will be prepared to testify.
