Steamboat local and U.S. Nordic Combined Ski Team member Bryan Fletcher is set to participate in the Walk for Hope on Oct. 17 in Salt Lake City, UT. Fletcher teamed up with Candlelighters, an organ

ization that helps families and children with cancer, to produce the event. “Our goal is to raise $30,000 for the program,” says Fletcher. “This is a small organization for kids that are ages up to 18 years- old, so the focus is for them.”

For Fletcher, the connection to childhood cancer is personal. At the tender age of 3, he was diagnosed with acute lymphatic leukemia. His cancer went into remission after a year of chemotherapy, and Fletcher hopes to help other children live out their full lives in health.

“Some of the money goes to research, but a lot of the money actually goes to families and into programs that help families,” Fletcher says of the fund allocation. “The kids can go to camps for cancer where they can socialize with other kids their age who have cancer. That allows them to have some fun and they’re not stuck in the hospital all the time. It’s a good program.”

Fletcher is currently training in Lake Placid, NY, working toward his goal of competing in the 2010 Olympic Games. “My main goal for the season is just to make the Olympics,” explains Fletcher. “It has been a goal of mine since I was a kid. Anything else I can accomplish in the season is considered, to me, a bonus.”

The Walk of Hope is Saturday, October 17 at Liberty Park, starting at 8 A.M.
