Tunnel skiing at Buttermilk, please don’t honk your horn

Tunnels are not just for cars and trains.  Of course, there’s the natural kind, the tunnel that is Hole in Wall just off piste from Mammoth Mountain.  And there’s the unnatural kind, such as the new transition tunnel being constructed at Buttermilk.

The tunnel serves as a divider between the very skilled and the barely skilled.  Buttermilk’s Meredith McKee resort says, “We knew that it would be better for traffic in that area because it was a high traffic area and we had a lot of different skier and snowboarder levels using that same run. This way, everyone will be going their own pace and staying out of each other’s way.”

The tunnel is part of $8 million of improvements at Buttermilk and should be open for non-car-honkers on December 12.
