Pot smokers getting busted for hot boxing in the parking lot at Arapahoe Basin

Sheriff’s deputies in Summit County have ticketed six people for possession of weed at the parking lot of Arapahoe Basin Ski Area since October 9.  Voters in Summit County voted 62% in favor of a statewide referendum that would have decriminalized possession of small amounts of marijuana.  The 2006 amendment, however, was defeated at the polls 60-40 percent.

Still, with an easy majority of its citizens in favor of decriminalization, residents in and around A-Basin are wondering, why the crackdown, why now?  “It’s just not believable to me that the courts, police and district attorney’s office would use resources to prosecute people in this county which is 62 percent in favor of (decriminalization),” Breckenridge attorney Sean McAllister told Summit Daily News.  “Clearly these people are not endangering other people and should have been left alone.”

Hot boxing in your car before hitting the first lift could be a costly one.  To combat, Sheriff John Minor has a tip for all Spicoli fans out there.  “Don’t attract attention if you’re going to smoke dope, especially in a public place, because we’re going to bust you.”
