Salt Lake City kidnapping victim Elizabeth Smart made an appearance this week at the California Governor and First Lady’s Conference on Women.  The topic of the event was “Overcoming the Unimaginable,” and Smart’s kidnapping ordeal back in 2002 was the focus of her speech. She was 14 years old when she was abducted from her bedroom, and now, as a 21-year-old college student, she was composed, well-spoken, and even good-humored while speaking at the Conference.

“We all have our trials, and we all experience hard times,” she said at the event.  Smart said that her family and faith kept her going throughout her nine months in captivity.  ”I know that we do have angels on the other side that we don’t see.  We’re never truly left alone in our darkest hour.”  The video of Smart’s speech can be seen above in the clip from The Today Show on NBC.
