An Italian government health official told the press today that “all Italian athletes set to compete in the 2010 Winter Olympics and Paralympics in Vancouver are to be vaccinated against the H1N1, or swine flu, virus.”

The shadow minister for health in the Italian government Ferrucio Fazio added “we don’t want the Italian delegation to be decimated so we will honor a request by the Italian Olympic Committee asking us to vaccinate all our athletes.”

Italy is sending 350 athletes, coaches, and staff to the Olympics in February, and in just the last two months, Italy has had 6 reported deaths from Swine Flu.  Reportedly, many Italian teams “decided to vaccinate their players against swine flu after eight players from fourth-tier club Lucchese contracted the virus.”  This fear of spreading the H1N1 virus comes on the back of England’s warning to its athletes against spitting to “avoid spreading the disease.”
