Saturday the season’s first big air of the LG Snowboard FIS World Cup took place in London.  Austrian Stefan Gimpl was able to celebrate his 30th birthday in style by taking first place.  Rounding out the top three were Gian-Luca Cavigelli and Domen Bizjark in second and third place.  Gimpl celebrated not only his birthday yesterday, but also his career’s seventh World Cup triumph with 52.7 points.

After winning the event, Gimpl told reporters that he “was very nervous up there although actually nothing could have gone wrong as [he] was lucky over the last years living on the sunny side of life. It seems that someone is meaning well for [him].”  Gimpl performed a “Frontside 1080″ then followed that up with a “Cab 900″ after the 15,000 spectators serenaded him with “Happy Birthday.”

It was also a good day for Cavigelli, who until yesterday had never placed in the top ten at a World Cup event.  Cavigelli also tore his ACL last year and considers yesterday’s event “the perfect comeback.”
