Hear of this new trend called geotourism? The National Geographic Society has created these geotourism maps for destinations all over the world. The Sierra Nevada region is the latest map to be added.

The geotourism map is basically a virutal map of an area with added special features. From the Tahoe Daily Tribune: “The interactive maps highlight cultural, recreational, ecological and other points of interest based around an area’s character, which allow prospective visitors to not only figure out what to do and where to go, but to connect them to the region and its issues.”

National Scenic Byways has given the Sierra Nevada Geotourism Project a $205,000 grant to help continue development. The Yosemite Gateway region is the first region of the Sierra Nevada area to be developed, with the Lake Tahoe/Central Sierra region due next. Let’s hope this project explodes and educates more people about these great areas like Tahoe. I’m sure it will bring out more and more visitors. One day every ski town may have a geotourism map attached to it. Bring on the tourism, spark up the economy, and let’s get things going again!
