Downhill Racer & Robert Redford DVD re-make on Criterion Collection

Forty years since its original release and just in time for the upcoming 2010 Vancouver Winter Olympics, Downhill Racer featuring Robert Redford is making a return to your local ski video outlet or living room next week on Nov 17. The Criterion Collection re-make of this old classic features a restored high-definition digital transfer, interviews with Robert Redford, screenwriter James Salter, film editor Richard Harris, production manager Walter Coblenz, and former downhill skier Joe Jay Jalbert, who served as a technical adviser, ski double, and cameraman.

In a beautifully understated performance, Redford is David Chappellet, a ruthlessly ambitious skier competing for Olympic gold with an underdog American team in Europe, and Gene Hackman provides tough support as the coach who tries to temper the upstart’s narcissistic drive for glory.

How much has the sport of skiing changed all these years? It would be interesting to watch Downhill Racer along with all the pre-Olympic coverage on television today. New school or just more of the same old in new clothing? See for yourself. The DVD retails for $29.95.
