BREAKING NEWS: Canadian court rejects women ski jumpers’ case

The British Columbia Court of Appeal upheld a lower court ruling, dismissing an appeal brought by Lindsey Van and other women ski jumpers.  The women are battling for inclusion at the Vancouver Winter Olympics.

The B.C. court upheld the lower court’s ruling that the IOC is not subject to the Charter of Rights and Freedoms.  The lower court had ruled that there was indeed discrimination, but that the IOC was outside its jurisdiction.

The women did not announce their next move, but it appears an appeal to the Supreme Court of Canada is likely.  The process, however, would take months.  The Winter Olympics are less than three months away.  High drama of the high courts, and it appears the women’s fight to be included in the only Winter Olympic sport that does not have competitions for both sexes will go down to the wire.
