The vacation together, spend holidays together, and podium together.  Maria Riesch of Germany bested best friend Lindsey Vonn in Levi Finland today, winning the first slalom of the World Cup season.

A mere 0.08 seconds separated the two inseparable friends.  It very well could have been Vonn’s win if not for a couple mistakes on the second run.  Regardless, Vonn had to be ecstatic with her podium finish, and she was.

“I think I had a pretty solid first run, but in the second run I had some small mistakes,” Vonn said. “Maria definitely had a great run today and I’m happy that she won. I’m happy with my second place. It was a solid result for me.”

After the uneven snow in Soelden, Vonn and the other racers were very happy with both course and snow in Levi.  “This hill reminds me so much of racing back home in Buck Hill (Minnesota),” Vonn said. It would have been nice to get the win again, but I had a big mistake at the bottom.”

Vonn had a bigger mistake last year on the Levi course, and still won.  This time her mistake opened the gate for Reisch, last year’s slalom title winner.

Tanja Poutianen of Finland finished third, 1.16 back of Reisch.  Poutianen was the GS winner at the first race in Soelden and holds the overall lead after two races.

Spending time on her own specially designed hill at Vail between the first two races, Vonn had said she still had work to do in dialing in her slalom set-up, after a switch to Head skis in the offseason.  After Levi, it appears Vonn and her equipment are both dialed in.

From here, Vonn returns to Vail on Saturday and will immediately begin training for the next race in Aspen in two weeks.
