San Clemente, CA resident, Matthew Mercuro, 36, was arrested and charged on Friday with embezzling more than $365,000 from skateboard pro, Ryan Sheckler.

Sheckler, of MTV’s “Life of Ryan” fame, had hired Mercuro to be the CFO for his two companies, Ryan Sheckler Rips LLC and Sheckler Merch 2 LLC.

Mercuro is accused of moving money from corporate accounts to personal accounts of his wife, and a friend. If convicted, Mercuro could face nearly 7 years in state prison. He is currently being held on $400,000 bail, and any money put up on his behalf must be proven as legitimate before he can post bond.

While the alleged crimes are disturbing in their own right, Sheckler is said to have known Mercuro for years as a trusted family friend. If the alleged crimes are found to be true, this incident may have a larger ripple effect throughout the action sports community.

Many of the top action sports athletes, including skiers and snowboarders, currently rely on their friends and family to handle a number of their business dealings. If Mercuro’s offenses are confirmed, it’s uncertain if and what effect this might have on the ski and snowboard industry’s top athletes as they decide how to direct the business side of their careers.
