Andrei Lutai, the Russian figure skater who placed 10th in last week’s Skate America competition in Lake Placid, NY, was arrested late Sunday after allegedly stealing a car and driving drunk.

Lutai, 23, apparently hopped behind the wheel of a 2008 Chevy Impala parked outside a service station (with the keys inside) and took it on a five-minute joy ride through town.

The Russian skater is now being charged with grand larceny, criminal possession of stolen property, unauthorized use of a vehicle and aggravated driving while intoxicated. He is due to make his first court appearance today in Lake Placid.

During Skate America, an Olympic pre-trial event, Lutai was the only male skater representing Russia. With only two spots left on the Russian team, it’s now questionable whether he can even earn a place on the squad.

Lutai is being held in the Essex County Jail on $100,00 bail. His attorney said he plans to enter a plea of not guilty.
