Medal favorite John Kucera out of Winter Olympics after surgery on broken leg

Depressing news for the Canadian alpine ski team.  John Kucera, the reigning downhill World Champion, will miss the Vancouver Winter Olympics.  Kucera fell on an icy part of the Lake Louise super-G yesterday.  He fractured both his tibia and fibula.  The race was delayed for 30 minutes as Kucera was airlifted off the course.  It was the second helicopter evacuation of the weekend at Lake Louise, following TJ Lanning’s frightening crash at 90 mph on Saturday.

The 25-year-old Kucera would have been a medal favorite.  But, after surgery Sunday on both his tibia and fibula, he will instead be on a long rehab road.

“John Kucera is known as a ski racer with a determined approach to achieving his goals. We are confident that he will set about his rehabilitation process the same way that he has approached his career on the slopes,” said Canadian ski team spokesman Max Gartner.
