Today, if you happen to be around the Aspen, CO area, take some to bear witness to the 90th birthday of one of skiing’s best leaders, Klaus Obermeyer.

Obermeyer, who launched Sport Obermeyer in Aspen nearly 65 years ago, has remained a name-sake in the industry for his passion and commitment to growing the sport.

To celebrate Klaus’ 90th birthday and the many accomplishments of Sport Obermeyer, a special celebration is planned in his hometown of Aspen including a retrospective and photo exhibition that will sit in Aspen’s Gondola Plaza. The photo gallery creates a visual timeline depicting the history of Klaus Obermeyer and the worldwide brand he created, from the early 1940s to the present. The panel frames are made of locally-harvested fire migration lodgepole pines built by The Public Works of Evergreen, Colorado. The photo gallery will remain in Gondola Plaza through December 6, 2009.

Additionally, if your VIP enough for Klaus to consider you as a friend, a special birthday party will be held at the Sundeck atop Aspen Mountain today, to celebrate Klaus’ milestone. Over 200 locals, industry VIPs and Klaus’ many family members and friends will gather to enjoy strudel, share their favorite Klaus stories, hear a yodel and take a run down Aspen Mountain with the man of the hour leading the way.

More About Klaus Obermeyer:

To watch Klaus ski is to witness his true love of the sport. It all began in 1919, in Oberstaufen, Germany, the small Bavarian alpine village in which Klaus was born. There, his passion began at the early age of three. In 1947, Klaus arrived in Aspen, Colorado, where he followed his entrepreneurial spirit. Sensing that people would spend more time on the slopes if they had great looking ski clothes that kept them warm, dry, and comfortable. He set up shop, the original Sport Obermeyer, in the attic of his home. There, one of the first of countless innovations was born in the form of a down ski parka stitched together from his goose down comforter. Innovations continue to motivate Klaus and the company he started – his enthusiasm is contagious, his energy seemingly endless, and his optimism boundless.
