Check out the newest press release from Smugglers’ Notch ski resort:

“December 8th new opening date for Smugglers’ Notch Resort, VT

Tuesday, December 8th is Smugglers’ new date for opening Sterling Mountain for skiing and snowboarding.

A little history: “We’re so ready to blast the snow guns top to bottom, but Mother Nature is holding back the cold temperatures at the starting gate,” said Smuggs President, Bob Mulcahy.  “We don’t want to open under marginal conditions, so after considering all the factors, Tuesday, December 8th is the new date.”  Mulcahy was referring to the warm temperatures that have plagued the snowmaking teams in Vermont and New England for most of November.

A winter snow storm on the Friday after Thanksgiving left 18 inches of snow on top of Sterling and Madonna mountains.  A week later the base temps were 35 degrees which consolidated the white stuff down to about half a foot.  Smugglers’ has been making snow ever since at the higher elevations whenever possible, but the night time temperatures haven’t dropped low enough at the lower elevations to allow the snowmakers to create a base at the bottom of the hill where the slopes are most needy of the white stuff.

Saturday will be the first opportunity to make snow at the base.  “The long range forecast is looking good for top to bottom snowmaking in the next week,” said Steve Wry, Smugglers’ director of mountain operations.

Full programming with the complete range of lessons and resort wide entertainment and activities begins on December 11, 2009. The Resort is open year-round with lodging, concierge services, pool and hot tub, sport shop and country store available.”
