Tall pro skiers give hope to fellow giants of the slopes

Simon Dumont. Jossi Wells. Henrik Harlaut. The list goes on and on. What do these three and countless other championship-winning pro skiers have in common?

Well, besides the fact that they are all Oakley-sponsored skiers, these skiers all measure below 5’7″, and all have incredible style to go along with their world-class skiing talent.

Growing up as a dedicated park skier the last couple years, I was always looking for fellow rippers who were a little bit more my stature. Through some fluke in the gene pool, I ended up a whopping 6’6″ even though neither of my parents measure above 6 feet. As a result, I’ve always had a slightly more difficult time in certain activities.

I should mention, not only am I pretty tall, I’m also incredibly lanky. These two factors combine to form what I like to call the “Perfect Storm of Bad Style.” My flailing arms, long legs, and skinny frame make it difficult to keep perfectly composed while laying down tricks in the park. I think I’ve maybe successfully “after-banged” only once or twice in my 7 years of freestyle skiing.

For a while I was losing hope. Sure, Pete Olenick had emerged as one of the top pros in the game, but he was only 6’2″. Olenick was pretty tall, and would find a way to use his height to his advantage when performing stylish overflips with ‘truck driver’ grabs. Still, the four-inch difference between us was much more sizable then it would initially seem.

So I waited.

After a few years spent hoping for some highly-skilled tall skiers to blow up, my wish was finally granted.

Today, skiing has pros like John Spriggs and Liam Downey who are both 6’5″. Teen heartthrob and podium machine, Bobby Brown, is 6’2″. Nick Martini is almost 6’3″. We are witnessing a changing of the guard. No longer will pro skiers be denied their due after being genetically “gifted” with extra height.

Tall pro Bobby Brown celebrates another win for tall skiers everywhere.
