Twilight star Taylor Lautner signs on to be extreme sports superhero ‘Max Steel’

Capitalizing off the stunning success of the Twilight series, and in particular “New Moon,” it has been announced that Paramount has signed on teen superstar Taylor Lautner for the big-screen adaption of Max Steel, an extreme sports junkie turned superhero.

Variety confirmed Friday that the actor, repped by William Morris Endeavor (WME), has signed on for the role.

Paramount, the studio backing the project, has been eager to develop additional toy franchises into potential blockbusters similar to the success of “Transformers.” Like “Transformers,” Max Steel traces back to the toy shelf as Mattel released the line in 2001, pulling in $100 million worldwide its first year. The toy line would later spawn an animated series that lasted three seasons.

Lautner will play Josh McGrath, a 19 year-old action sports athlete, who is accidentally hit by the power of nanotechnological machines. This incident results in mutations that give Max increased strength, near-invulnerability and the ability to change his appearance.

With superhero traits like that, it would be wise for Paramount to include skiing among the crop of action sports that McGrath (Lautner) will partake in during the course of the movie. If that’s the case, let’s just hope Lautner has actually been hitting up some skiing in his spare time so he doesn’t end up looking like a “gaper” come film time. However, we all know what side Team Jacob is on, so it’s tough to say.
