Whistler closes ‘Peak 2 Peak’ gondola today for evacuation training

Skiers and boarders in the Whistler Blackcomb area should take note that the new “Peak 2 Peak” gondola will be closed today. The tram connecting Whistler and Blackcomb mountains will not be operating due to evacuation training being held on the engineering marvel.

The gondola will re-open for normal operation starting tomorrow December 10th.

For those unfamiliar with the specs on the “Peak 2 Peak,” check out the numbers:

- Ride spans 2.73 miles
- 1.88 miles of unsupported cable between 2 towers
- Ride time is approximately 11 minutes
- Highest point clocks in at 1427′ above Fitzsimmons Creek
- There are only 4 towers in total
- Highest Tower is 213 feet

After looking at all those impressive numbers, having the gondola closed for the day to do evacuation training seems pretty understandable. I don’t think anyone would want to find themselves 1427′ above the ground “on the shoulders of giants,” with no evacuation plan in place.
