An update was posted this afternoon by Allan Brettman of The Oregonian as the search continues for Katie Nolan of Southeast Portland and Anthony Vietti of Longview, Washington.
A small window in which the storm clouds cleared allowed for seven climbers to head out in a Sno-Cat to Palmer Glacier. From there, the search would continue on backcountry skis to a rendezvous “safe spot.” It is hoped from that location, members of the Portland Mountain Rescue would be able to reach Reid Glacier.
The search would concentrate on areas above 10,000 feet after lower elevation seaches revealed no signs of the missing climbers. Hindering the search are avalanche dangers that have been described as “extreme.”
An Oregon Army National Guard UH-60 Black Hawk helicopter touched down near the Timberline Lodge this morning and has joined the search effort.
