Lindsey Vonn first, Julia Mancuso third in Val d’Isere downhill training run

For Lindsey Vonn, it seemed to be simply a prelude for Saturday’s fetivities.  Vonn bested the entire field in today’s training run for Saturday’s downhill.  Her winning margin was 0.27 seconds over Austria’s Elisabeth Goergl.

For Julia Mancuso, it seemed to be a flashback to her first ever World Cup victory, a win on this same Val d’Isere course in 2007.  Much has been written about “Super Jules” off-season rededication, and early on, it appears those efforts are paying off.  Even though Mancuso has yet to land on the podium through the first four stops, her skiing has been aggressive and strong.  If Squaw Valley‘s Mancuso can eliminate the mistakes, and put together a clean run, her skiing will take care of the rest.

Tomorrow (Thursday) is the second training run, with the super combined on Friday, the downhill on Saturday, and the super G on Sunday.  Mancuso and Vonn will be battling it out.  It will no doubt be an exciting weeekend of races.

Right now, for the overall World Cup title it’s looking a lot like last year, with BFFs Lindsey Vonn and Maria Riesch battling it out.  Riesch leads Vonn 441 points to 421.  Look for the two to swap places after the weekend.  Riesch placed 13th on Wednesday, 1.71 seconds back of Vonn.
