Lake Tahoe students in better physical shape than other California students

And we think we know why…they ski more often than other kids in California. It’s safe to say kids who grow up in South Lake Tahoe may ski more often, and start at a younger age, than other kids in the state who don’t grow up so close to the mountains. Skiing works your entire body, focusing on your core and legs, and it certainly gets your heart pumping. Take it from our own staffer Zeke Piestrup, Big Bear native and skier extraordinaire: “With the energy it takes to ski at the speed I want, sometimes I feel like my chest is going to explode. Definitely a great cardio workout”.

The results from the California Physical Fitness Test, given to 1.38 million CA students in the fifth, seventh and ninth grades, conveyed not only that South Lake Tahoe students are the most physically fit, but also that students’ fitness levels are rising in general. “The percentage of students who are in the healthy fitness zone is increasing,” said Jack O’Connell, state superintendent of public instruction, in a prepared statement.
