Matti Nykanen, the four-time Olympic Champion and ski jumping Michael Jordan from Finland has been arrested for attemping to murder his wife, Mervi Tapola with a knife on Christmas Day.

Nykanen made big news at the 1988 Calgary Games by winning three gold medals and has also won four world championships.  He is still one of the biggest names in the sport of ski jumping.

Tapola ran to the neighbors and and called police with injuries to her hands and forehead.  This is not Nykanen’s first brush with spousal violence as he has spent four months in prison already for assaulting her in 2006. Nykanen also was arrested for stabbing a friend in the back, but his 26-month sentence was somehow suspended.

Note to self…When at dinner with Nykanen at Benihana’s – sit across from him, don’t make him mad and wear kevlar.
