Julia Tchepalova has been the pride of Russian female nordic skiing. Indeed, she is considered to be one of the most successful women nordic skiers of the past 10 years, earning an Olympic gold medal in 1998, 2002 and 2006. She also claimed world titles in both 2001 and 2005. However now, she has been banned from competition until August 20, 2011. She, along with fellow nordic skier Natalia Matveeva tested positive for EPO (erythropoietin) earlier this year.

Tchepalova tested positive in Val di Fiemme, Italy during a World Cup leg on January 3rd, 2009.

Matveeva tested positive for EPO on January 16 during a World Cup race in Whistler, and she is banned from competing until March 12, 2011. She and Tchepalova both have the right to appeal the FIS decision to the Court of Arbitration for Sport.
