Ski to lose weight, and get paid for it

Did the holidays leave you a few pounds over your happy zone? How could they not? Turkey, ham, cheese, cookies, cakes, pies, breads, veggies…covered in cheese…yea, not the best time for weight loss.

If you’re thinking of taking up skiing to help you shed some pounds, first of all congrats! We think it’s one of the most fun and exhilarating ways out there to get your blood moving and your heart pumping.

Second of all, did you know you could actually get paid to lose the weight? According to TIME Magazine, “financial incentives are the latest wellness craze”. Maryland resident Welmoed Sisson has joined 5,000 others in joining, a new site (launched in October) that will pay you for losing weight. Corporate sponsors pony up the cash. To get cash, you have to change your BMI (body mass index) to a healthy number in a certain amount of time. You can either sign up for free and win $100, or “super-size” the weight loss incentives by paying up to $300 in order to win up to $1,000. “Sure, I’d like to look and feel better,” Sisson says, “but it is so subjective. Money is a better motivator because it is tangible. You can hold it in your hand.”

According to the Journal of the American Medical Association, people are five times more likely to meet their weight loss goals if money is dangled in front of them. “Employers and individuals are desperate for a new approach,” says Dr. Kevin Volpp, lead author of the study and director of the Center for Health Incentives at the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine and the Wharton School. “We will undoubtedly see more of these programs and initiatives in the future.”

The deadline to enter on is January 20th, so strap on those skis and get on the mountain!
