Petter Northug reclaims overall Tour de Ski lead

The Norwegian has climbed back to the top of the Tour de Ski. Petter Northug turned 24 today and spent his b-day pulling ahead of Swiss Dario Cologna and Swede Marcus Hellner in the final stretch of a 36K race in Cortina, Italy today. He finished in with a solid time of 1 hour, 25 minutes and 38 seconds.

Northug started three seconds behind Hellner due to the handicap start (based on skiers position in overall Tour de Ski rankings), and still managed to force a third place finish for Hellner.

Northug’s total Tour de Ski time is now 2:17.28.2, with Cologna 0.4 seconds behind..

On the women’s end, Arianna Follis moved to the top of the standings by winning the 16-kilometer freestyle race in 34:34.8, ahead of Petra Majdic of Slovenia and Justyna Kowalczyk of Poland.

The overall winner of the Tour de Ski receives 400 World Cup points.
