Mike Douglas pegs chances of halfpipe skiing in next Winter Olympics as 50-50

Mike Douglas — The Godfather of the New School, ski film legend, Whistler proselytizer, Salomon FreeSki TV producer/host, guest on the The Ski Channel show Moguls, and big wave skier — spoke to ESPN’s John Symms (we won’t play the same game with Mr. Symms) and near the end of the article pegged the chances of halfpipe skiing being part of the 2014 Winter Olympics as 50-50.  You can read the entire article (“Wave Skiing, Etc.”) here.  This is the excerpt where Mike talks to John Symms about halfpipe skiing and the Winter Olympics.

MD:  We (the Association of Freeskiing Professionals) discussed at great length the next steps that needed to be taken by the sport in order to give halfpipe skiing a chance at being featured in the 2014 Winter Olympic Games.

JS:  And what are the chances of that at this stage?
MD:  Very much a mystery. My guess is that if the IOC stays consistent with its past behavior, it will wait for the sport of halfpipe skiing to begin to die out before they add it to the Winter Games.

JS:  What are the steps that the AFP deems as being crucial to making pipe skiing an Olympic event before it’s dying out?
MD:  First, there needs to be a deeper level of cooperation between the International Ski Federation (FIS) and the AFP. Right now, pipe skiing is looking pretty good at the top end. The level of skiing there is comparable to that of the top level in snowboarding. But where we are lacking is in the feeder programs.

Your sport is supposed to be fully represented from the ground up with members of all ability levels who are interested in participating and competing. There’s much more to a sport’s admission to the Olympics than being bad-ass and super cool and getting tons of chicks—

JS:  There you go, talking about surfing again. Given what you’ve seen and heard, what would you estimate the chances are that pipe skiing will be an Olympic event in 2014?
MD:  To be honest, I’d say that pipe skiing has about a 50/50 shot right now.
