U.S. Freestyle Ski Team athlete Casey Puckett crashed a turn away from nabbing his first World Cup win in Les Contamines, France today (Jan. 10). As a result, the former alpine tech-skiing star finished fourth.

Puckett led the pack in the ski cross event which was originally scheduled for yesterday, but postponed due to foggy conditions. U.S. Team Ski Cross coach Tyler Shepherd said he wasn’t sure what happened when Puckett fell.

“It’s ski cross, sometimes that’s the way it goes,” Shepherd mused.

Frenchman Xavier Kuhn passed Puckett and claimed the win.

Puckett’s teammate, Daron Rahlves spent the week at home training in Tahoe before returning to the World Cup ski cross circuit in Lake Placid, NY, on Jan. 21.
