Lindsey Vonn wins super G, first American ever to pull the hat trick

HAUS IM ENNSTAL, Austria (Jan. 10) – These are special times to be Lindsey Vonn, to be a fan of Lindsey Vonn, or to jump on the Lindsey Vonn bandwagon.  This is Michael Jordan special,  and another Lindsey Vonn won’t be coming along in any of our lifetimes.  Don’t say you weren’t warned.

After missing out on impossible hat tricks at Val d’Isere and Lake Louise, Vonn made the impossible happen with a super G win today after consecutive downhill wins.  Yep, hat trick, but unlike in hockey, it’s a feat rarer than birthing triplets.

“It’s good to know that I can do it,” Vonn said. “There was definitely a little bit more pressure today because everybody was wanting me to do the three in a row, and I wanted to do it myself, so it’s just good to know that I can ski well under pressure, and it just gives me more and more confidence going into Vancouver.”

Vonn became the first American – man or woman – ever to win on three straight days. The last time an international woman accomplished the feat was Dec. 4-6, 1997, when German Katja Seizinger won a speed trio in Lake Louise, AB.

“The course was awesome, I had so much fun,” Vonn said. “The snow was in perfect condition and I just let it go. I didn’t concentrate too much on all the tactics, I just tried to really charge as much as I could.”

Vonn trailed Sweden’s Anja Paerson at the first interval, but by the middle section of the course, it was game over.  Vonn wins by a massive 0.53 seconds.

Heading towards the slalom in Flachau, Austria on Tuesday, the great Lindsey Vonn leads the overall standings by 192 points over Maria Riesch.
